Spain and its population

  1. Spain is a democracy

Spain is a democracy because citizens choose their own representatives to manage the country.

The constitution is the most important law in Spain (1978). It has got the rights and the duties of citizens. Spain is a parliamentary democracy. Only people over 18 can vote.

  1. The organisation of territories

Spain ir organised into territories which are divided into smaller units.

Municipalities-Provinces-Autonomous communities-Spain-UE.


MUNICIPALITY

The municipal government attend to the basic services and affairs or the population such as cleaning, street lighting and transport. 

    
Town council formed by the Mayor and town councillors.

Citizens over 18 vote to elect the mayor and councillors.



  1. The population of Spain

Population is the combination of all the inhabitants who live in the same place. The number of inhabitants depends on the birth/death rates and emigration/immigration.

Population pyramids are graphs that show the profile of population of a country according to age and gender. 

POPULATION DENSITY

It is the relationship between the amount of people living a place and the size of the territory.

In Spain: coast line and Madrid are the places more populated.

  1. Economic activities in Spain

The population can be classified into two groups:

Non-working population and working population.

There are 3 economic sectors: Primary sector (5% of working population; agriculture, cattle raising and fishing); Secondary sector (30% of working population; make products in factories, Industries); Tertiary sector (65% of working population; tourism and services).

  1. Transport

Transport is necessary for moving people and goods (merchandise). Air transport, Rail transport, Road transport (highest risk of accidents) and sea transport.

ROAD SAFETY

Public roads (pedestrian areas)
Road signs (STOP, GIVE WAY, ETC)  ARE NECESSARY.

Safety measures (seatbelt, cycling helmets, etc) To prevent accidents.
