1. The solar system
(sistema solar)
The sun is a star and the planets are celestial bodies. Stars
give out light and heat but planets don’t. The planets orbits around the sun
(star).
El sol es una estrella y los planetas son cuerpos celestes.
Las estrellas dan luz y calor pero los planetas no. Los planetas orbitan
alrededor.
The stars and the planets form planetary systems and ours is
called “The solar system”. Our galaxy is the Milky way. The moon is the
satellite that orbits Earth.
Las estrellas y los planetas forman sistemas planetarios y el
nuestro se llama “sistema solar”. Nuestra galaxia es la vía láctea. La luna es
el satélite que orbita la tierra.
We study the planets from the closest to the furthest to the
sun:
Nosotros estudiamos los planetas del más cerca al más lejano
del sol:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune. Pluto is no longer considered as a planet.
Mercurio, Venus, Tierra, Marte, Júpiter, Saturno, Urano y
Neptuno. Plutón no es ya considerado como un planeta.
2. The movements of
Earth and the Moon. (los movimientos de la tierra y la luna).
Earth is always moving. The two main movements are: rotation
and revolution.
La tierra siempre se está moviendo. Los dos movimientos
principales son: la rotación y la traslación.
Earth’s revolution: Earth orbits the sun and takes 365 days
to go all the way around.
La rotación de la tierra: Tierra orbita el sol y eso lleva
365 días en dar una vuelta alrededor.
Earth’s rotation: Earth spins on its own axis and takes 24
hours to complete one 360º spin.
La rotación de la tierra: La tierra gira sobre su propio eje
y eso lleva 24 horas para que complete un giro de 360º.
The Moon also spin son its own axis and orbits the Earth. It
takes 28 days (lunar month).
Main phases of the moon: full moon, waxing moon, new moon and
waining moon.
La luna también gira sobre su propio eje y orbita la tierra.
Eso dura 28 días, ciclo lunar; Las fases de la luna son: luna llena, cuarto
menguante, nueva luna y cuarto creciente.
Do you know…? Meanwhile the Earth is spinning the seasons
occour.
Sabes qué? Mientras que la tierra gira (sobre sí misma y
alrededor del sol), las estaciones suceden.
3. Earth (La tierra)
Equator: divide Earth into two halves (north hemisphere and
south hemisphere). We have two poles (north and south).
Ecuador: divide la tierra en dos mitades llamadas hemisferios
(norte y sur). Nosotros tenemos dos polos (sur y norte)
Meridians and parallels:
Meridianos y paralelos.
4. The layers of Earth
(las capas de la tierra)
-atmosphere: layer of air that surrounds Earth protecting
living things from the heat of the Sun.
-atmosfera: capa de aire que rodeo la tierra protegiendo a
los seres vivios del calor del sol.
-geosphere: layer of rock from the centre to the surface of
Earth. Divided in three parts: CORE, MANTLE AND CRUST.
-Geosfera: capa de roca desde el centro de la tierra hacia la
superficie de la tierra. Dividido en 3 partes: núcleo, manto y corteza.
-hydrosphere: layer of water at the Earth’s crust. Three
states: liquid, solid or gas.
-hidrosfera: capa de agua que cubre la tierra. Está en tres
estados: líquido, sólido y gas.
